The Los Angeles Dodgers have a magic number of 1. One more Dodgers win or one more San Diego Padres loss and the National League West is theirs. That is why the MLB magic numbers 2026 picture beats the standings page in September: a six month season compresses into one digit telling you exactly how many things still have to happen.
Everything below is current as of the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, from the official MLB standings, last updated 5:52 a.m. ET. Standings move nightly, so treat every figure as a snapshot.
How MLB magic numbers 2026 are actually calculated
The formula is one line. Take the games the leader has left, add one, then subtract the gap in the loss column between the leader and the chaser.
Tampa Bay is 91-59 with 12 games left. The Yankees are 88-63, which is four more losses. So 12 plus 1 minus 4 equals 9. The shortcut version skips games remaining entirely: 163 minus the leader's wins minus the chaser's losses, or 163 minus 91 minus 63. Same 9. Either way, a leader win and a chaser loss each burn one.
One wrinkle breaks most magic number charts. There is no Game 163 anymore. Ties are settled by head to head record, which appears to be why MLB lists the Rays at 8 over New York rather than the textbook 9. Every magic and elimination number below is MLB's own published figure, not my arithmetic, so where the published value already accounts for a tiebreaker you get the real one.
Division magic numbers as of Sept. 16, 2026
A leader's division number is the largest elimination number among the teams still chasing. Beat the closest pursuer and you have beaten everyone behind them.
NL Central: clinched. Milwaukee (94-57) is in, carrying the best record in baseball. The ESPN game report has it as a fourth straight NL Central title, the first such run since the division was created in 1994.
NL West: Dodgers 1. Los Angeles is 92-59 with 11 to play. San Diego (82-69) tops out at 93-69, one win past the Dodgers' current total.
NL East: Braves 5. Atlanta (89-63, 10 left) leads Philadelphia (83-68) by 5.5 games.
AL East: Rays 8. Tampa Bay (91-59, 12 left) is 8 over the Yankees (88-63) and only 2 over Boston (82-69). The bigger number governs.
AL Central: White Sox 10. Chicago is 77-74, a half game up on Cleveland (77-75), with 11 to play.
AL West: Astros 10. Houston is 76-75, one game up on Texas (75-76), with 11 left. Seattle (70-82) is a live but distant 5.
A magic number of 10 with 11 games left is barely a lead. Neither club is more than three games over .500, and Houston's cushion on Texas is a single game.
AL wild card: elimination numbers for the tightest race in baseball
The Yankees (88-63, berth already clinched) and Red Sox (82-69) sit comfortably in the top two wild card slots. The third and final spot belongs to Cleveland at 77-75, and the Guardians need 10 with only 10 games left. Cleveland has no margin: every Guardians loss must be matched by a Rangers loss.
Elimination numbers for everyone chasing that last spot, straight from MLB:
1. Texas Rangers (75-76, 1.5 back): 10 2. Toronto Blue Jays (75-77, 2.0 back): 9 3. Baltimore Orioles (74-78, 3.0 back): 8 4. Detroit Tigers (72-79, 4.5 back): 7 5. Minnesota Twins (70-81, 6.5 back): 5 6. Seattle Mariners (70-82, 7.0 back): 4 7. Kansas City Royals (66-85, 10.5 back): 1
Detroit is the one to flag. At 72-79 the Tigers sit 4.5 back with an elimination number of 7, so any combination of seven Cleveland wins and Detroit losses ends it. The Tigers need to keep winning as badly as they need Cleveland to stumble.
NL wild card: three teams and a 2.5 game cushion
Chicago (84-68) and Philadelphia (83-68) hold the first two NL wild cards, 1.5 and 1.0 games clear of the cut line. San Diego (82-69) owns the third spot and needs 8 with 11 to play.
1. Arizona Diamondbacks (80-72, 2.5 back): 8 2. Pittsburgh Pirates (75-76, 7.0 back): 4 3. Miami Marlins (75-77, 7.5 back): 3 4. St. Louis Cardinals (75-77, 7.5 back): 3
Arizona at 8 with 10 games left is the only genuinely live chase; everything below is arithmetic on life support.
What a clinch number does to betting markets
A magic number is a live probability input, and markets reprice around it faster than casual bettors adjust.
Division futures die at 1 or 2. The Dodgers at 1 are a settled market. Whatever price survives is juice, not edge.
Eight to 10 with 11 games left is the coin flip zone. The AL Central and AL West both live there. A division that looks locked because the leader is technically in first is, in clinch math terms, close to even. Price the number, not the table position.
The last wild card is where the value sits. Berth markets overweight brand and underweight the loss column. Detroit at 7, four and a half back with 11 to play, is the archetype of a team whose price lags its arithmetic.
One result moves seven markets. A single Guardians win cuts the elimination number of all seven AL chasers at once. That cascade is why late September berth prices swing hardest per game.

What to watch next
The AL Central decides itself directly: Chicago plays at Cleveland on Sept. 16, a leader sitting on 10 against a chaser half a game back. Boston visits Texas, so the Red Sox can cut a Rangers elimination number while protecting their own slot. Atlanta plays at Chicago, touching the NL East number and the top NL wild card at once.
Milwaukee, the Dodgers, the Rays and the Yankees have clinched berths. The other eight spots settle over the final two weeks, then the Wild Card Series begin Sept. 29. FAQ
How is an MLB magic number calculated? Games remaining for the leader, plus one, minus the loss column gap to the closest chaser. Or simply 163 minus the leader's wins minus the chaser's losses. Subtract one more if the leader owns the head to head tiebreaker, since no tiebreaker game exists.
What is the Dodgers' magic number? It is 1 as of Sept. 16, 2026. Los Angeles is 92-59 and San Diego is 82-69, so one Dodgers win or one Padres loss clinches the NL West.
Which MLB teams have already clinched in 2026? Milwaukee, the Dodgers, Tampa Bay and the Yankees hold clinched berths. Only Milwaukee has taken a division, winning the NL Central on Sept. 15.
When do the 2026 MLB playoffs start? Tuesday, Sept. 29, with Game 1 of all four best of three Wild Card Series. Game 2 follows Sept. 30 and Game 3, if necessary, is Oct. 1.
