Reliever Trent Thornton took a 109 mph line drive off his foot in the tenth inning and told the Chicago Sun-Times he does not want to go on the injured list, saying he would put a Band-Aid on it if that is what it takes. Thornton carries a 2.70 ERA across 30 innings and is one of the few stable pieces in that bullpen. The Sun-Times reported Tuesday that he likely will need only a few days to get back on the mound.

Detroit Is Chasing the Division, Not the Wild Card

Hinch was direct about the noise. "We've been playing Game 7 since May. We know what's ahead. We know what the conversation around our team is," he told Rogers before Monday's game. "Tarik is in the news every single day because someone has a dream trade to make up," he said, before noting the team still has a game to win that night. He added that the club is "not naïve that we need to win more games in order for us to maintain our trajectory."

The roster is getting healthier at the right moment. Gleyber Torres came off the injured list Monday, with Hinch saying he would ease him back and that he may not play every day for the next ten days. Javier Baez began a rehab outing at Class-A Lakeland on Tuesday. Tarik Skubal has a 2.97 ERA in seven games since returning from a six-week elbow injury.

Chicago Needs Arms and Says So

Jed Hoyer has not been coy. "From a pitching-staff standpoint, it's been a challenge, obviously, with all the injuries," he told the Sun-Times last week. "That's been challenging to get to steady footing, so to speak. ... The hope is we can get to that place."

Hoyer went further on what specifically he wants, describing manager Craig Counsell's preference: "Craig likes out-getters. He also likes not burning through the bullpen all the time. It's important to be able to give him some stability. [One guy] getting 18 or even 21 outs in a game makes the next game a lot easier. ... It has a cascading impact that is real."

The injury list explains the urgency. Ben Brown, who carries a 1.85 ERA, is on the 15-day injured list with a neck strain. Edward Cabrera is out with a hamstring issue. Justin Steele, Cade Horton and Shelby Miller are on the 60-day. Closer Daniel Palencia is rehabbing elbow inflammation in Arizona. Phil Maton landed on the injured list Monday for the third time this season with an inflamed knee, and Counsell said Tuesday that Maton faces three weeks of inactivity following a PRP injection.

Chicago has already brought in Tyler Ferguson, Jayden Murray, David Peterson and Aaron Civale. None of them is the 21-out starter Hoyer just described.

The Tigers are 18-25 as a moneyline underdog, but Detroit is 10-5 against the spread in Montero's starts specifically, while Chicago is 5-11 against the spread in games Rea starts. numberFire's model gives the Cubs a 59.6 percent win probability, which is meaningfully stronger than the -116 price implies.

Totals lean the other way from the venue reputation. Cubs games have gone over 53 of 97 times this season, Tigers games only 42 of 99. A total of 8 at Wrigley in late July is a weather-dependent number, and the wind is the variable no model handles cleanly.
