Morant's on court production has followed his availability down. He averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists across 20 games last season while shooting career lows of 41.0 percent from the floor and 23.5 percent from three. Twenty games.

The absences are a mix. Morant served an eight game suspension in March 2023 and a 25 game suspension to open 2023-24, both stemming from incidents in which he displayed a firearm on Instagram Live. Memphis suspended him one game last season after a confrontation with coach Tuomas Iisalo following a loss to the Lakers. Layered onto that are shoulder and elbow injuries that required season ending surgeries.

Portland also has a problem of arithmetic. Morant joins a point guard group that already includes Jrue Holiday, Damian Lillard and Scoot Henderson. Somebody's minutes are about to disappear, and somebody's usage rate with them.

The Case For

Morant is 26. That is the entire case, and it is not a small one. He was Rookie of the Year in 2020, Most Improved Player in 2022, All-NBA Second Team, a two time All-Star, and he holds the Memphis franchise record for points in a game with 52. Two seasons of health at 26 is a plausible ask.

The ownership context matters too. Portland's new owner is Tom Dundon, whose Carolina Hurricanes won the 2026 Stanley Cup. What to Watch Next

Portland's guard rotation is the first real signal, and it will not be readable until preseason. Second is Morant's medical availability, which Portland has not publicly detailed. Third is whether Dundon's front office makes a follow up move to clear the backcourt logjam, because carrying four point guards into October is not a plan.

Memphis is the other half of this. The Grizzlies have flipped their entire core inside 14 months and now hold an asset base and a lottery outlook that will shape their win total, their trade deadline behavior, and the value of every Grant prop between now and February.
