Kyrie Irving did not play in the Dallas Mavericks' preseason opener in Macao on Friday, Oct. 9, and was listed for left knee rest, per Dallas Sports Journal. The Houston Rockets won that game 135-117, per ESPN's scoreboard. The Kyrie Irving return now points to Sunday, Oct. 11, the second of Dallas' two exhibition games against Houston in Macao.

Before Friday's tip, coach Dusty May said Irving will play in Sunday's game, Dallas Sports Journal reported. NBA reporter Keith Smith also said Sunday now appears to be the target, per ClutchPoints via Yahoo Sports. Irving has not played since he tore the ACL in his left knee against the Sacramento Kings on March 3, 2025.

Kyrie Irving return: where things stand

The plan shifted over two days. On Oct. 8, May told reporters in Macao that Irving would play in one of the two games but that the staff had not decided which one, per Yahoo Sports, citing Christian Clark of The Athletic. "Based on how his body feels, especially with the jet lag and things like that. It's still inconclusive at this time," May said.

Mavericks PR listed Irving as out for Friday's game because of left knee rest, per ClutchPoints. Sunday's game tips at 5 a.m. CT on NBA TV, per Dallas Sports Journal.

Irving told reporters at media day that he is under no physical restrictions. "I'm ready to go out there and kick some butt," Irving, 34, said, per ESPN. New team president Masai Ujiri said that in terms of health, Irving is "right there."

The setback nobody knew about

Yahoo Sports called it a longer-than-anticipated absence, and Irving explained why in China. He told reporters he suffered a Grade 2 calf strain during rehab in December. "That did put me out for about eight weeks," Irving said, per Yahoo Sports. The Mavericks had not disclosed that setback before ruling him out for the rest of the 2025-26 season on Feb. 18.

Yahoo Sports also noted that Irving had been playing at a high level before the injury, averaging 28.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.8 steals and 1 block per game in his previous 10 contests. Whether that version of Irving comes back at 34 is the central question for Dallas this season.

A different Mavericks team around him

Irving returns to a rebuilt franchise. Dallas finished 26-56 last season, its worst record in eight years, per ESPN. Ujiri was hired in early May and then hired May in late June to replace Jason Kidd. May led Michigan to last season's NCAA title before making the jump.

The biggest change on the floor is Cooper Flagg, last season's unanimous Rookie of the Year, per ESPN. Irving and Flagg have yet to share the court in a real game, since Irving missed all of 2025-26, per Yahoo Sports. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to grow with him," Irving said at media day.

Dallas was short-handed on Friday beyond Irving. Dallas Sports Journal listed P.J. Washington Jr. (left ankle sprain), Marcus Sasser, Caleb Martin (illness), Santi Aldama (right knee surgery) and Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery) as out alongside him. Morez Johnson Jr. started at center in his NBA debut.

Betting and DFS impact

The futures market is not pricing Dallas as a contender. DraftKings has the Mavericks at +18000 to win the 2026-27 title and +8000 to win the Western Conference, per ESPN's odds feed on Oct. 10. By our math, +18000 implies about a 0.55% chance and +8000 about 1.2%.

The division board is just as lopsided. DraftKings lists the San Antonio Spurs at -1200 to win the Southwest, with the Rockets at +750 and the Mavericks at +7500, per the same Oct. 10 feed. A -1200 price implies roughly 92.3%, which leaves very little room for anyone else.

The Mavericks' 2026-27 win total sits at 34.5 at BetMGM, with the over at -110, per BetMGM's Mavericks win total page as read Oct. 10. BetMGM's writer took the over and argued that Irving will be healthy after a year off and that Dallas owes its first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets, so there is no tanking incentive. That is one writer's opinion, not a market consensus. Our full board is in the NBA win totals breakdown.

For daily fantasy, the practical point is workload. Irving sat Friday, and May had already said he would play only one of the two Macao games. If Dallas eases him in once the season starts, that matters for Flagg's usage and for any Irving player props when regular-season lines open. For nightly model reads once games count, see StatSniper's AI sports picks and the daily NBA picks page.

Friday's game also gave one market data point. DraftKings had Houston at -3.5 with a total of 231.5, per ESPN's game summary. The Rockets won by 18 and the teams combined for 252 points, so Houston covered and the over hit, but that was without Irving and five other Dallas players.

What to watch next

Sunday, Oct. 11 vs. Houston in Macao. Whether Irving actually plays, and for how long, is the first real data point on his knee.

Any change to his status. He sat Friday for left knee rest. Watch the Mavericks' injury report before Sunday's 5 a.m. CT tip.

Opening night, Oct. 21 at Houston. Dallas opens its regular season on the road against the Rockets, then hosts the Spurs in its home opener on Oct. 24, per ESPN.

Futures movement. If Irving looks sharp, check whether DraftKings moves Dallas off +18000.
