The New York Knicks won the 2026 NBA title and are priced at +850 for next season. The San Antonio Spurs, the team they beat, are +250. That is the cleanest market disagreement on any board in American sports right now, and it is worth understanding before the number moves.

San Antonio went 62-20 in Mitch Johnson's first full season as head coach, finished second in the West behind Oklahoma City's 64-18, beat the Thunder 4-3 in a Game 7 on the road on May 30, and then lost the Finals to New York in five games. Both DraftKings and FanDuel have responded by making the losing team a co-favorite to win it all in 2026-27.

What the Books Are Actually Showing

DraftKings opened its 2026-27 championship market on June 13, hours after the Finals ended, with San Antonio and Oklahoma City tied at +250, Boston at +550 and New York at +700.

FanDuel published an updated board on July 2, after the offseason's biggest trades cleared, and the shape held: San Antonio +250, Oklahoma City +260, New York +850, Boston +1200, Toronto +2000, Philadelphia +2200, Denver +2200, Detroit +2200, Cleveland +2200, Minnesota +2700 and Miami +3000.

Note what happened to the two teams that played in June. Across both books the champion sits well behind the team it beat, and San Antonio has held its spot at the top of the board all summer. Books almost never price a Finals loser ahead of a Finals winner, and they are doing it here on both sites.

The Case the Market Is Making

Three things are carrying that number.

First, San Antonio was the second-youngest team to reach a Finals in the shot clock era, at an average age of 25.06 years weighted by postseason playing time. That is not a roster with a closing window. Dylan Harper made the All-Rookie First Team and Keldon Johnson won Sixth Man of the Year, so the depth behind the star is young and already producing.

Second, the series was closer than 4-1 reads. Game 2 went 105-104. Game 4 went 107-106 and required the largest comeback in Finals history, a 29-point New York rally. San Antonio won Game 3 by four. Four of the five games were decided by four points or fewer. Flip two possessions and the entire narrative inverts. Jalen Brunson scored 45 in the 94-90 Game 5 clincher at Frost Bank Center on June 13 and took Finals MVP, and the Knicks earned it, but a five-game series decided by a total of a few possessions is not evidence of a gap.

Third, and mostly, Victor Wembanyama.

Why Wembanyama Carries the Spurs' 2026-27 Title Odds

He averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.1 blocks in the 2025-26 regular season, with 1.9 made threes per game. He won Defensive Player of the Year unanimously, taking all 100 first-place votes, the first unanimous DPOY in NBA history and the youngest winner ever at 22. He led the league in blocks for a third consecutive season, making him the third player in league history to win three straight blocks titles. He made All-NBA First Team and All-Defensive First Team and finished third in MVP voting.

Then he got better in June. Across the five Finals games he averaged 26.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks.

FanDuel's 2026-27 MVP market, published June 14, has him at +200, ahead of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at +330, Nikola Jokic at +550, Luka Doncic at +700 and Giannis Antetokounmpo at +1200. A player who has never won MVP being a clear favorite over three former winners is the market saying the third-place finish was a floor, not a ceiling.

Wembanyama's own read after the Game 4 collapse was characteristically unsentimental. He told reporters that it would go one of two ways, a bad one and a good one, and that "the bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together." After the series ended he went further, saying one of the things he learned was that the margin of error is very, very thin and that the team's mistakes were punished so hard it could not afford swings like that.

The East Got Harder, Which Helps a West Ticket

The three biggest moves of the offseason all landed in the Eastern Conference, and all three cut against the teams standing between New York and a repeat.

Miami completed its acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo on July 6, sending Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-rounders, a first-round swap and a 2033 second to Milwaukee for Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. Miami sits at +3000.

Philadelphia agreed to a trade for Jaylen Brown on July 1, sending Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks to Boston. That is why the Celtics sat at +1200 on the July 2 board and the Sixers at +2200, sharply in from where Philadelphia sat before the deal.

Toronto is the one to be careful with. The Raptors are priced +2000, which is fifth on FanDuel's board, and that number is being carried with the Kawhi Leonard trade still unresolved. The deal is on hold pending the NBA's outside-counsel investigation into the Clippers, with no timetable, and reporting as of mid-July had a conclusion still weeks away. A +2000 price on a roster whose headline addition may not arrive is the softest number in that range.

Betting and DFS Impact

The honest framing on San Antonio, which opened at +250 and was still +250 a month later, is that it is a fair price, not a value price. Even at the opening number you were getting roughly 28.6 percent implied probability on a 62-win team returning its entire core with the MVP favorite. There is no discount here, and anyone selling this as an overlay is ignoring that the books moved first.

The actual edge, if there is one, sits in the gap between the two markets. Wembanyama at +200 for MVP is a shorter price than his team at +250 for the title, which is unusual and reflects real conviction in the individual award. If you believe the Spurs thesis, the MVP ticket is the cleaner expression of it, because it does not require San Antonio to survive Oklahoma City in a seven-game series to cash.

For season-long and DFS purposes, the number to build around is the block rate. Three straight blocks titles at 3.1 per game with a unanimous DPOY behind it makes Wembanyama the most reliable defensive-category anchor in fantasy, and the Finals uptick to 3.6 suggests the workload scales rather than erodes.

What to Watch Next

Two things move these numbers before opening night. The first is the Leonard resolution, which will reprice Toronto and, by extension, the middle of the East. The second is LeBron James, who told the Lakers he plans to play elsewhere in 2026-27 and, as of publication on July 22, had not signed anywhere. Any contender that adds him reshapes the board underneath San Antonio.

Watch for a refreshed championship market once free agency fully settles. Prices will move again once the market absorbs the remaining free agency dominoes, and futures lines this early in the summer tend to move on news rather than on games.
