American football at night under stadium lights

Trevon Diggs is signing a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, and Seattle followed by announcing the signing along with the release of receiver Julian Hicks. The Trevon Diggs Seahawks deal lands on a defending champion that turned over its secondary in the offseason. It is not a luxury add. With Terrion Arnold stuck in legal limbo and Riq Woolen and Coby Bryant gone from the 2025 secondary, Seattle just brought in a depth body who had played 21 games in the three seasons up to the day Dallas cut him.

What the Trevon Diggs Seahawks deal actually is

One year. That is the entire disclosed term. NFL.com, carrying Schefter's report, described it as a one-year contract and did not attach a dollar figure, and its report carried no guarantees or base salary. Treat any number floating around as unsourced until Seattle files it. NFL.com also noted the club worked out the 27-year-old Diggs earlier in the week.

The timing is the story. Seattle agreed to terms with Arnold, the former Lions first-round pick, earlier in August, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday that the signing is on hold while the team works through logistics. The league is expected to place Arnold on the Commissioner's Exempt List once he signs, meaning he cannot practice or play while his legal process runs. Detroit released him in June, shortly after a Florida judge set bail at $1 million on eight felony charges tied to a February robbery and kidnapping.

Head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters on Aug. 14 that the timeline was "being worked out," adding, "we have an agreement with him, and we'll see." That is a coach describing an asset he cannot schedule. Diggs answers a roster question Arnold was supposed to solve.

The room needed the body regardless. Per CBS Sports' offseason ledger, Seattle lost corners Woolen and Tyler Hall and safety Coby Bryant, and added Noah Igbinoghene, D'Anthony Bell, Brandon Johnson, safety Rodney Thomas and drafted corners plus second-round safety Bud Clark.

The numbers behind the signing

Diggs was a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2020 and made two Pro Bowls in six seasons in Dallas. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021 and was a first-team All-Pro that year, which earned him a five-year, $97 million extension in July 2023.

The years since are the reason he was available in late August. NFL.com's report at the time of his release put him at 21 games over the previous three seasons, including just two in 2023 before an ACL injury. In 2025 he missed eight games on injured reserve with a concussion he later said came from a TV-mount pole falling on his head at home, and he dealt with a knee injury as well. Dallas waived him on Dec. 30, 2025, reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Jane Slater, with Pelissero framing the release as the accumulation of multiple factors rather than one incident.

Green Bay claimed him off waivers and got almost nothing out of it: two appearances, Week 18 and the Wild Card Round, one snap in the playoff loss, released after the postseason. That is the honest baseline. Seattle is buying a 2021 season and hoping the knee cooperates.

Compare that to what sits next to him. Devon Witherspoon agreed to a four-year, $132 million extension on Aug. 15, per Schefter, at a $33 million annual average with more than $101 million guaranteed, which NFL.com reported makes him the highest-paid corner in the league. Seattle is paying record money at CB1. What it is paying opposite him has not been disclosed.

Betting and DFS impact

Start with a dated price. Per a CBS Sports Seahawks futures preview published Aug. 1, R.J. White listed Seattle's DraftKings win total at 10.5 with the Over at minus 115 and the Under at minus 105, NFC West at plus 205, Super Bowl at plus 1100 and make the playoffs at minus 225. That snapshot predates the Witherspoon extension and the Diggs signing. Use it as an anchor, not as today's board.

A one-year veteran flier does not move a season win total. What it can move is the weekly stuff. Seattle's 2025 defense finished second in opponent yards per play and first in third-down success rate, per CBS Sports, and that unit is the load-bearing wall under the repeat case. If CB2 is unsettled into September, the market expression is opponent team totals and passing props, not the futures ticket.

Schedule shape decides when it matters. CBS Sports calls the first half more manageable, with one tough road opponent on the docket until Week 12 at San Francisco, and both Rams games land in the final three weeks. A shaky secondary gets hidden in September and exposed in December. Our NFL prediction hub reprices these spots weekly instead of locking in an August guess.

For DFS, the read is target distribution. If offenses work away from Witherspoon, the volume has to go somewhere, and the outside job opposite him is the obvious place to look. Track preseason snap splits, and let Chad AI sort it once the regular-season sample starts.

What to watch next

First, the 53-man cutdown. A player added this late in camp is not guaranteed a roster spot, and Diggs' remaining preseason snap count is the tell.

Second, Arnold's exempt-list timing. If the league processes him quickly, Seattle's corner math changes again. If it drags, Diggs' snap count climbs.

Third, Week 1. Seattle opens against New England in a Super Bowl LX rematch, and the secondary gets tested immediately. Our 2026 NFL win totals breakdown has where Seattle's 10.5 sits against the rest of the league.

The pattern is familiar: a name signing generates headlines out of proportion to its snap share. StatSniper tracks that gap week to week, and it is usually where the number is wrong.

FAQ

How much is the Trevon Diggs Seahawks contract worth? The terms have not been disclosed by a first-tier source. NFL.com, relaying Schefter's report, described it as a one-year contract without a dollar figure. Seattle announced the signing and the corresponding release of receiver Julian Hicks.

Why did the Cowboys release Trevon Diggs? Dallas waived him on Dec. 30, 2025, per Pelissero and Slater. Pelissero reported the release came from the accumulation of multiple factors, performance among them, rather than a single incident. Diggs had missed eight games on injured reserve with a concussion that season.

Is Trevon Diggs replacing Terrion Arnold in Seattle? Not officially. Seattle has an agreement with Arnold, but Rapoport and Garafolo reported the signing is on hold and the league is expected to place him on the Commissioner's Exempt List, so he cannot practice or play near term.

Does the Diggs signing change Seattle's Super Bowl odds? The last Seattle futures numbers we have on file predate the signing. Per that Aug. 1 DraftKings snapshot in CBS Sports' futures preview, Seattle sat at plus 1100 to win the Super Bowl and plus 205 to win the NFC West, on a 10.5 win total.
