Cale Makar is playing this season on the last year of a six-year, $54 million deal with a $9 million average annual value, a number set on July 24, 2021, before the two Norris Trophies and the Conn Smythe that followed. The Cale Makar contract question in Colorado is not whether the Avalanche pay him. It is when they get it done, and whether the paperwork clears a date most fans have never had to think about.

That date is Sept. 15. Miss it and Colorado permanently loses a year of term it can never get back, on the one player the franchise least wants to reopen this conversation with. Makar can become an unrestricted free agent after 2026-27.

The Cale Makar contract deadline and what changes at it

NHL.com reports that Makar can sign a contract as long as eight years until Sept. 15, and that after that date the new collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association limits maximum contract lengths to seven years.

Through Sept. 15, Colorado can buy eight seasons. After it, the ceiling is seven and the eighth year is gone for good. Makar became eligible to extend on July 1. As of Aug. 26, the eight-year window has 20 days left in it.

The eighth year matters more than it sounds. Term is the cheapest currency in a cap league: spreading a large total payout across one additional season lowers the annual cap hit, which is the only number that actually constrains a roster. Lose the year and someone has to give up something else to close the gap, usually in AAV.

Colorado's season opens against the Los Angeles Kings at Ball Arena on Sept. 30, and training camp starts in September. The practical negotiating runway is measured in days, not months.

The current deal, and the player it no longer describes

The $9 million AAV was set in 2021. The record Makar has built since is what Colorado is negotiating against now.

He was third among NHL defensemen last season with 79 points (20 goals, 59 assists) in 75 games, and finished second to Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski in Norris Trophy voting. He has won the Norris twice, in 2022 and 2025. Per NHL.com, he joined Bobby Orr as the only players to be a Norris finalist at least six times in their first seven seasons, and last season was his third straight with at least 20 goals, making him the first defenseman to do that since Phil Housley and Al MacInnis in 1992.

The 27-year-old, selected No. 4 in the 2017 NHL Draft, is already the all-time leader among Colorado and Quebec Nordiques defensemen in goals (136), assists (371) and points (507) across 470 games in seven seasons. He won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022 and took the Conn Smythe Trophy with 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 20 playoff games.

Avalanche president of hockey operations and general manager Joe Sakic has been consistent about the outcome. "We continue talking," Sakic said Sunday, per NHL.com's Aug. 24 report. "Pretty confident he'll be signed before the season starts. I'm not worried about it. I don't think Cale's worried about it. Dialogue has been great and when there's an agreement, we'll gladly announce it. Hopefully something will be done before the start of training camp."

In June, Sakic put it more bluntly: "Cale is going to finish his career here."

Cap math, roster context and what bettors should take from it

Colorado spent the offseason clearing room. The Avalanche traded Valeri Nichushkin to Columbus for three draft picks, a move that also subtracted the final four seasons of his eight-year contract, and sent Ross Colton and Jack Drury to Nashville in two June trades. Those savings, per NHL.com, let Colorado keep its defense intact by signing Brett Kulak to five years and Brent Burns to a one-year deal on June 26, then add Jaden Schwartz on a three-year contract July 1.

That is a front office building runway for a raise, not one bracing for a departure. The remaining open items are Makar and coach Jared Bednar, who is 445-262-75 over 10 seasons and is also unsigned beyond this year.

The on-ice case for paying is not subtle. Colorado's defense allowed an NHL-low 197 goals and 26.1 shots per game, tied for the fifth-fewest, on the way to a Presidents' Trophy season of 55-16-11 and 121 points, the most in franchise history. Then it got swept by Vegas in the Western Conference Final, with Makar limited by an upper-body injury suffered in Game 5 of the second round against Minnesota. Sakic said in August he expects everyone, Makar included, to report to camp healthy.

Now the honest part on the betting side. We could not verify a dated, current sportsbook price on any Avalanche futures or Makar award market at the time of writing, so we are not printing one. Treat any AAV projection you see attached to this story the same way: those are analyst estimates, not reported terms, and nothing has been announced.

What is actually actionable is the structure of the news. A signing before camp removes a distraction from a contender and confirms the core stays intact through the window Sakic has described. Sept. 15 passing with the deal unsigned is the version worth watching, because the eight-year option lapses and the two sides start negotiating over a smaller box. What to watch next

Three markers, in order. Any announcement on or before Sept. 15, the last date an eight-year deal is available. The opening of training camp, which NHL.com places in September without a date. Then the Sept. 30 opener against Los Angeles, which he plays without an extension in hand if nothing has been signed by then.
