"With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request," Hellebuyck said. "My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family."

He added that he had privately requested a trade "several months ago" and that he hoped "a resolution can be reached soon." Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff responded the same day with a statement acknowledging that Hellebuyck "has been open with us about his desire for a change," while closing with the line that has defined the almost three weeks since: "there is no update at this time."

Why the market froze

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, writing in The Athletic on Sept. 8 and reported by TSN, named the Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth as the plausible landing spots, with Florida out of the running after spending its assets on Brady Tkachuk and then adding Jacob Markstrom in net.

LeBrun's summary is the cleanest statement of the problem anyone has offered: "The bottom line at the moment, as far as I can ascertain, is that there's just nothing on the table that would represent a fair deal for Winnipeg." He added that the Jets "can't give him away."

That is a supply and demand mismatch, not a haggle. HockeyFeed, carried by Yahoo Sports on Sept. 14, reported that TSN's Darren Dreger called the incoming offers "terrible" and believes Hellebuyck will not waive for a Canadian team, and that most legitimate contenders already have a settled goaltending situation. Treat those as reports rather than confirmed positions.

The no-move clause is the whole story

Here is the structural fact that explains why this could drag. Per TSN, Hellebuyck holds a full no-move clause through next July, at which point it converts to a 10-team approved trade list. He is in year three of the seven-year, $59.5 million contract he signed on Oct. 9, 2023.

So Winnipeg cannot simply find the best offer. It has to find the best offer from a team Hellebuyck will approve, at a price the Jets consider fair, before the clause softens next summer. All three conditions have been failing at once since June, when the Sabres and Jets discussed a deal ahead of the first round of the draft and were unable to reach one, per TSN.

Vezina market. He won it three times, most recently in 2024-25, then posted a career-worst .895 save percentage with a 2.86 goals-against average and a 23-23-11 record in 57 games last season. A bettor is choosing between those two versions, and the answer is mostly about the team in front of him.

Goalie start props. If Hellebuyck reports and plays, Stuart Skinner, signed July 1 to a two-year deal, becomes the backup in a tandem nobody can model yet. If Hellebuyck sits or is dealt, Skinner's start volume changes overnight. Do not lock a season-long assumption on Winnipeg's crease this week.
