The bracket itself is fixed. No. 1 plays No. 8 and No. 4 plays No. 5 in one half; No. 3 plays No. 6 and No. 2 plays No. 7 in the other. The 1/8 winner meets the 4/5 winner in one Semifinal, and the 3/6 winner meets the 2/7 winner in the other. Because there is no reseeding, an eighth seed that upsets a first inherits that slot and meets the 4/5 winner rather than the best team left in the field.

Home court runs a different pattern in each round. The First Round is 1-1-1: the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3, the lower seed hosts Game 2. That replaced the old 2-1 setup specifically so both teams in every First Round series are guaranteed a home date. The Semifinals are 2-2-1, with the higher seed hosting Games 1, 2 and 5. The Finals are 2-2-1-1-1, with the higher seed hosting Games 1, 2, 5 and 7.

Seeding ties get broken by formula, not by a play-in game. The Golden State Valkyries' official club site lays out the order the league applies when two teams finish level: head-to-head win percentage, then win percentage against all teams at .500 or better, then head-to-head point differential, then total point differential for the season. What the format does to betting and DFS

A best-of-three is the shortest series the league runs, and the First Round is four of them at once, opening Sept. 27 and over by Oct. 2. Two wins end it. A single cold shooting night from a favorite, or one foul-trouble game from a star, decides a series that a best-of-seven would absorb over four more games. The arithmetic is unforgiving: a better team converts its edge into a series win far less reliably over two required wins than over four, so a best-of-three sits structurally closer to a coin flip than any other round on the calendar.

The no-byes rule compounds that. Every team, including the No. 1 seed, has to survive that stage before reaching a format long enough to reward depth. Under the pre-2022 structure, the top two seeds skipped it entirely. What to watch next

Three dates set the outer walls of the calendar.
