Analysis

The market still treats the Los Angeles Dodgers like the juggernaut they were in May, but the current reality is much different. They have stumbled to a 2 of 10 record over their last ten games. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are surging with a 7 of 10 record in that same span. We are getting the hotter team at home with plus money on the moneyline and a massive cushion on the spread. Eduardo Rodriguez carries a season ERA of 2.71, and while his recent 4.82 mark is a bit higher, he still matches up well against Justin Wrobleski. Wrobleski has struggled lately, posting a 5.36 ERA over his most recent starts. Arizona puts up 4.5 runs per game and they cover the spread at home 56 percent of the time. The season series is dead even at 6 and 6 with an average margin of only 0.3 runs. My model puts the Arizona win probability at 58.1 percent, which creates a huge 14.8 percent edge on the moneyline. Taking the 1.5 runs is the safer play with a 26.4 percent edge, but I am fine with the moneyline too. Arizona is the better team right now. The numbers prove it. And when you look at how the Dodgers have played on the road, covering only 47 percent of their games, the value on the Diamondbacks becomes even more obvious.

The public loves to bet on big names like the Dodgers regardless of their current form. LA has lost 8 of their last ten games, yet they are still being priced like a dominant favorite.

Analysis

It is hard to find a reason to back the Seattle Mariners offense right now. They are ranked dead last in the league, 30 out of 30, and they are facing a Tampa Bay Rays defense that ranks 8th overall. Seattle only manages 3.9 runs per game. That is not going to cut it against a Tampa Bay team that is 7 of 10 in their last ten outings and currently on a four game winning streak. Emerson Hancock has been solid for Seattle with a 3.33 ERA, but he gets zero help from his hitters. But the Rays have dominated this matchup this season, winning 4 of the 5 games played between these two clubs with an average margin of 1.2 runs. The betting line is giving Seattle 1.5 runs as a favorite, but my model sees this as a much tighter game. The model spread is plus 0.3 versus the book line of minus 1.5. That creates a 22.5 percent edge on Tampa Bay +1.5. Seattle only covers the spread 38 percent of the time at home, while the Rays cover 53 percent of their road games. Tampa Bay has the momentum and the superior defensive matchup. Seattle will struggle to manufacture runs again. Zero help.

Bettors are looking at Emerson Hancock and thinking Seattle has the pitching edge. They are ignoring the fact that the Mariners have the worst offense in the league and have lost 4 of 5 games against Tampa Bay this year.

Analysis

The Houston Astros are finally playing like the team everyone expected to see this year. They have won 8 of their last ten games and are coming in with plenty of momentum. Cristian Javier had a rough start to the season with a 6.59 ERA, but look at his recent form. He has posted a 3.38 ERA over his last few starts, showing he has found his rhythm. The San Diego Padres are a respectable 6 of 10 recently, but their offense ranks 21st in the league. Houston brings a top 10 offense to the table, averaging 4.7 runs per game. Even though San Diego has a slight edge in the head to head series this year, the model sees this game as a virtual coin flip. My model spread is San Diego minus 0.1, yet the books are giving us Houston +1.5. That is a 20.1 percent edge that is too large to ignore. Houston covers 53 percent of the time on the road. They have the better hitters and a pitcher who is trending in the right direction. San Diego is being overvalued at home here. Take the runs with the hotter team. Easy call. They have the power to keep this within a run or win it outright.
