Toronto might be under .500 on the season, but they have been the Red Sox's kryptonite this year. The Blue Jays are 8 for 3 in the season series against Boston with a healthy average margin of 1.4 runs. That is not a small sample size. The model sees a massive 22.1 percent edge on Toronto +1.5 because the pitching matchup is heavily tilted in their favor. Jose Soriano has been excellent with a 3.29 ERA, and he has been even sharper lately with a 2.65 mark over his recent starts. On the other side, Ranger Suarez is struggling. While his season ERA of 3.32 looks fine, his recent form is a mess at 5.57. He is giving up hits and runs at a much higher clip than he did in the spring. Toronto does not have a powerhouse offense, ranking 29th in the league, but they match up well against this Boston staff. The Red Sox defense is ranked second, but that has not stopped the Jays from winning eight of eleven meetings so far. Toronto is 6 for 4 in their last ten games and playing with some confidence. This is a pure fade of the Minnesota pitching situation. Zebby Matthews has been struggling mightily. His season ERA is 5.23, but his recent starts have been a disaster, ballooning to a 7.20 ERA. He is a liability right now. Baltimore counters with Shane Baz, who has been lights out lately. Baz has a 3.76 season ERA, but he has trimmed that down to a 2.22 ERA in his recent outings. The discrepancy in starting pitching is the whole story here. The model shows a 19.5 percent edge on the Orioles getting 1.5 runs. It is actually projecting a very close game, almost a toss up, which makes the run line extremely valuable. Baltimore allows only 3.5 runs per game compared to the 5.5 runs that Minnesota gives up. Even though the Twins have a top ten offense, they are facing a pitcher in Baz who is in peak form. Both teams are 4 for 6 in their last ten games, so neither side is exactly surging. However, the Orioles have won three of the five meetings between these clubs this year. The average margin in those games is just 0.2 runs. In a game that the model expects to be decided by a single run or less, taking the Orioles at +1.5 is the only logical move.
