He is giving up runs in bunches and the Giants should be able to capitalize early. On the other side, San Francisco sends Blade Tidwell to the hill. Tidwell has been excellent this year with a 3.00 ERA, though he has slipped slightly to a 5.14 in his most recent starts. Still, the gap between these two right now is significant. Texas has one of the worst offenses in the league, ranking 26th out of 30 teams. They struggle to string hits together and now face a Giants defense that ranks 20th. San Francisco has already beaten Texas once this season, winning that game by a margin of 4 runs. The model has the spread at 0.6, yet we are getting 1.5 runs with the Giants. That is a massive 11.2 percent edge. Texas only scores 4.2 runs per game while allowing 5.1. The math just does not support them being this big of a favorite. Take the runs and run.

Seattle is heading in the opposite direction, having lost 6 of their last 10. The Mariners offense is essentially non existent, ranking 28th in the league. They only score 4.0 runs per game. Now they have to face a Detroit defense that ranks 6th overall. That is a nightmare matchup for a struggling lineup. Emerson Hancock has been solid for Seattle with a 3.26 ERA, but the Tigers offense has enough life to keep this game tight. Detroit scores 4.5 runs per game and their defense is elite enough to bail them out if the bats go quiet. The Mariners only cover the spread in 38 percent of their home games, while the Tigers are much more reliable on the road, covering 49 percent of the time. The model spread is only 0.6, but the books are giving us 1.5 runs. When you have a top 10 defense playing a bottom 5 offense, taking the extra runs is the smart play every single time. Detroit has already won the season series 2 to 1 so far, and I expect another close one here.

The Diamondbacks defense as a whole only allows 3.5 runs per game, which is one of the better marks in the league. San Diego is the hottest team in baseball, winning 8 of their last 10 games. While their offense is capable, Randy Vasquez has been serviceable enough to keep games under control. The Padres offense ranks 23rd, and they are facing an Arizona defense that is top 20. The model projects this total at 8.3, giving us a solid edge on the Under 8.5. Both teams have been playing tight, low scoring games lately. Arizona is 4 and 3 against San Diego this year, and most of those games have been battles. With Rodriguez on the mound, runs will be at a premium. Don't expect a lot of fireworks in this one.
