The Pittsburgh Steelers agreed on Wednesday night, Sept. 30, to trade cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, sources confirmed to ESPN. DallasCowboys.com reported the same night that the Cowboys had agreed to terms on the deal. The Joey Porter Jr. trade ends a monthslong extension standoff in Pittsburgh and gives a 1-2 Dallas team help at cornerback, where injuries have piled up.

Per ESPN's trade tracker, the deal was confirmed to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe and ESPN's Todd Archer, and Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein also confirmed the compensation. ESPN credited The Ringer with first reporting it. ESPN and DallasCowboys.com both describe an agreement, not a finalized deal.

Reports earlier on Wednesday indicated the Detroit Lions and New York Giants had offered third-round picks, and no team had floated a second-rounder, per Yahoo Sports. The Dallas package includes a 2028 second.

Why Pittsburgh moved on

The core dispute was the guaranteed money in the contract's structure, sources told ESPN, and the sides never made meaningful progress despite talking as late as hours before the Steelers' Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh then stopped negotiating because of a longstanding organizational principle of not negotiating during the regular season. General manager Omar Khan had reiterated that policy on Aug. 31, per Yahoo Sports.

Porter is in the final year of his rookie deal, which pays him $3.924 million this season, per Yahoo Sports. The cornerback market moved this offseason when Christian Gonzalez (four years, $135 million) and Devon Witherspoon (four years, $132 million) signed new deals, per Yahoo Sports. ESPN's Ben Solak wrote that Porter reportedly had contract demands at the top of that market, where those two deals sit at or above $33 million per year.

Porter reported aggravating his back injury during a mobility workout on the first day of training camp, spent all of camp and the preseason on the physically unable to perform list, and was inactive for the first three games, per ESPN. The Steelers ruled him out again on Wednesday for Thursday's game at Cleveland after he had been a full participant in Monday and Tuesday walkthroughs.

What Dallas is getting

Porter was a 2023 second-round pick out of Penn State and has played 47 career games with 41 starts, totaling 165 tackles, 31 pass breakups and three interceptions, per DallasCowboys.com. In 2025 he appeared in 14 games with 52 total tackles, one sack, one interception and 14 passes defended, per Yahoo Sports.

Per NextGenStats figures cited by DallasCowboys.com, Porter allowed 35 receptions on 66 targets for 412 yards in 2025, with no touchdowns allowed, and quarterbacks posted a 66 passer rating throwing his way. ESPN's Solak graded the deal a B for Dallas and a C+ for Pittsburgh, noting Porter is a much better man coverage defender than zone defender.

Dallas needs the bodies. Cobie Durant is expected to miss a second straight game with a hamstring strain, and his replacement, Shavon Revel, hurt his knee and ankle in the Week 3 loss to Baltimore and was limited on Wednesday, per ESPN. By the end of that game, the Cowboys were using backups Caelen Carson and Ameer Speed opposite DaRon Bland, with practice squad call-up Reddy Steward in the slot.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones signaled interest on 105.3 The Fan this week without naming Porter. "I'd just say we're right on top of it," Jones said, per ESPN and DallasCowboys.com.

This is the third Steelers player Dallas has acquired in a 17-month span, per Yahoo Sports. In May 2025, Dallas sent a 2026 third and a 2027 fifth to Pittsburgh for George Pickens and a 2027 sixth. In August, the Cowboys added tackle Broderick Jones and a 2027 fourth for 2027 third- and sixth-round picks, a deal we broke down in our Cowboys Broderick Jones trade analysis.

Betting impact: Cowboys at Texans and the Pittsburgh secondary

Dallas (1-2) visits winless Houston (0-3) on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. ET on FOX in Week 4, per ESPN. In ESPN's Week 4 odds column published Sept. 30, DraftKings had Houston as a 2.5-point favorite, with the Cowboys at +120 on the moneyline and a total of 48.5 (opened 47.5). As of Oct. 1, ESPN's game data listed DraftKings at Houston -3, Dallas +136 and Texans -162, with the total still 48.5. Neither source ties that half-point move to the trade, so don't read it as a Porter adjustment.

The bigger question is whether Porter plays at all on Sunday. DallasCowboys.com said his debut timeline depends on when he arrives and how the team assesses him physically, and Yahoo Sports said it is yet to be seen whether he plays against Houston. Until Dallas clears him, price this matchup with the depleted secondary that finished the Baltimore game.

Longer term, ESPN's Solak sketched options rather than guarantees: Porter on the outside could let Bland slide back inside and move 2026 first-round pick Caleb Downs from the slot to his natural safety spot. In Pittsburgh, Asante Samuel Jr., Jamel Dean and 2026 third-rounder Daylen Everette will keep rotating outside, per ESPN. The Steelers (2-1) were 2.5-point DraftKings favorites at Cleveland (2-1) for Thursday night, per ESPN's Sept. 30 odds column.

What to watch next

First, the formal announcement and Porter's arrival. The Cowboys practice Thursday and Friday before flying to Houston on Saturday, per DallasCowboys.com, so his first practice reports will show whether he is a Week 4 option. Second, the contract: Porter won't get an imminent extension in Dallas, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, and he hasn't asked for one yet, per the Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins, both as cited by Yahoo Sports. Third, the rest of the market. The 2026 NFL trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET, per ESPN's 2026 NFL trade deadline tracker, which lists only the Porter and J.J. McCarthy deals as in-season trades so far.
