La Liga Opening Weekend: Madrid, Barca and Atleti Sit It Out

Deportivo Alaves host Getafe at Mendizorroza on Saturday at 19:30 CEST to start the 2026-27 Spanish season. It is the first of only five matches across three days. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are all absent, which means the first round of pricing this season arrives without a single one of the three clubs the Spanish market usually builds around.

That is not a scheduling quirk to skim past. It changes which games carry liquidity, which numbers move on small money, and how much the early table is worth reading.

The La Liga opening weekend fixture board

Five matches run from Saturday to Monday. All times below are CEST, the local Spanish kickoff time, which in August is UTC plus two hours.

A sixth round-one fixture, Atletico Madrid v Malaga, follows on Wednesday 19 August at 21:00 CEST. Three more matchday one games do not get played until the following week, and a fourth was pulled off Sunday's card at the last minute.

Three of the clubs in round one are promoted sides. Racing Santander and Deportivo both play this weekend, while Malaga wait until Wednesday. All three came up from Segunda, and Deportivo are back in the top flight for the first time since 2017-18.

Why Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico are missing

The 2026 World Cup finished less than a month before the Spanish season was due to start. Per beIN Sports, the RFEF established a provision letting clubs with a significant number of players involved in the World Cup semifinals or final push their opening league fixture back to 25, 26 or 27 August. Nearly every eligible club took it.

Barcelona had eight players in Spain's World Cup-winning squad. Real Madrid supplied Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni to France's semifinal side and Jude Bellingham to England's bronze-medal run. Real Betis leaned on the same rule through Giovani Lo Celso's Argentina campaign.

The three deferred fixtures:

Valencia v Real Betis, Tuesday 25 August

Real Madrid v Real Sociedad, Wednesday 26 August

Barcelona v Athletic Club, Thursday 27 August

All three kick off at 21:00 CEST, and all six clubs open their season on matchweek two instead. Real Madrid start Jose Mourinho's second spell away at Espanyol on 22 August, and defending champions Barcelona begin at Elche on 23 August.

One club turned the option down. Celta Vigo were entitled to defer through Borja Iglesias, part of Spain's winning squad, and chose to play Osasuna on Sunday anyway. Then the pitch intervened. La Liga postponed that game on 13 August after a fungus was detected on the Balaidos surface, and it has been rescheduled for Thursday 27 August at 20:30 CEST.

Betting and DFS impact of a thin opening slate

A five-game board behaves differently from a ten-game one. Liquidity that would normally spread across a full round concentrates into fewer markets, and with no Madrid or Barcelona fixture to absorb the recreational money, it lands on Sevilla, Villarreal and Espanyol instead.
