Masters 2026 Round 2: Hatton Surges to 7-Under, McIlroy Stays Atop Augusta Leaderboard

Hatton Catches McIlroy: The Round 2 Leaderboard at Augusta

Friday at Augusta National delivered one of the more compelling second-round leaderboards in recent Masters history, with Tyrrell Hatton producing what stands as the best single round of the 2026 tournament. The Englishman joined defending champion Rory McIlroy at 7-under par, matching a number that seemed untouchable when McIlroy and Sam Burns fired matching 67s on Thursday.

Hatton entered Round 2 in a precarious position. His Thursday scorecard included bogeys on the third, seventh, and ninth holes, offsetting a pair of birdies and leaving him at 1-over through 13 holes. He battled back to finish the opening round at even par, tied for 30th and well off the pace. What unfolded Friday was a complete reversal: Hatton birdied his way through Augusta with a focused, aggressive round, reaching his third birdie of the day at the seventh hole and continuing to attack. A birdie at 16 pushed him to 7-under for the day and into a share of the tournament lead.

McIlroy Seeks Back-to-Back Green Jackets

Rory McIlroy arrived at Augusta as the defending champion, chasing back-to-back green jackets for the first time since Tiger Woods accomplished that feat in 2001 and 2002. He co-led after 18 holes alongside Sam Burns, both at 5-under 67. McIlroy has shown Augusta National comfort all week, and at 7-under through 36 holes, the Northern Irishman is firmly positioned to contend through the weekend.

The back-to-back narrative is enormous from a betting standpoint. McIlroy was installed as the pre-tournament co-favorite alongside Scottie Scheffler, and a lot of pre-tournament money was tied up in the two names that dominate the sport right now. With McIlroy near the top of the board heading into the weekend, those pre-tournament wagers are alive and well.

Scheffler Struggles in Round 2

The Scottie Scheffler situation is the most consequential story on the board from a betting perspective. Scheffler entered Friday at 2-under, three strokes off the pace but well within striking distance of a charge. What unfolded instead was a round full of frustration, with Scheffler missing several short par and birdie putts and sitting at even par through his first five holes. That pushed him back to even for the tournament, currently outside the top five.

Scheffler is a two-time Masters champion and the world number one. His Augusta record speaks for itself. A Friday stumble does not eliminate him; players have made up multi-shot deficits at Augusta in the past. But the difference between 2-under entering the weekend and even par is significant on a course where the leaderboard typically compresses heading into Saturday's moving day. Scheffler needs a strong finish in Round 2 and a clean Saturday to stay in contention.

The Chasing Pack: Clark, Rose, Koepka

Wyndham Clark made the most of the morning wave, shooting 4-under 68 to move to 5-under for the tournament and into the clubhouse lead for a stretch Friday. Justin Rose was one shot off the pace entering the back nine of his second round, with birdies keeping him in the conversation. Brooks Koepka was identified as one of the names to watch heading into the afternoon wave, continuing a Masters track record that includes multiple top-10 finishes in recent years.

LIV Golf representatives Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau struggled through the opening rounds, with neither player posting the kind of number that would have generated weekend buzz.

Weekend Betting and DFS Angles

The Round 2 leaderboard reshapes the betting market in several important ways.

Hatton at 7-under is an eye-catching number, but his history at Augusta includes volatile scoring and the occasional blow-up hole. Pre-tournament bettors who faded Hatton are now facing a dilemma: the man is leading the 2026 Masters heading into the weekend. His recent form on the PGA Tour showed a player capable of stringing together elite ball-striking rounds. If he can maintain his composure on the back nine Saturday, the conversation around him becomes very different from where it started the week.

McIlroy at 7-under is the cleaner narrative for bettors. He has Augusta experience, he is the defending champion, and he has shown the ability to close on major stages. His odds have almost certainly contracted from pre-tournament prices, but he remains the most compelling bet to win outright heading into the weekend.

Wyndham Clark at 5-under is worth a look for those seeking value. Clark's ball-striking statistics have been excellent this season, and 5-under at Augusta with two rounds to play is a live number if the leaders come back to the field even slightly on moving day Saturday.

For DFS tournaments this weekend, the structure around the Hatton-McIlroy co-lead sets up a classic ownership question. Both will be highly owned. Finding the right combination of leverage plays from the chasing pack, including Rose, Clark, or a resurgent Scheffler, could be the differentiator in large-field GPP formats.

Cut Line and Field Reduction

The 36-hole cut at Augusta falls at the end of Friday's play, reducing the field heading into the weekend. Players sitting on the wrong side of the projected cut line face pressure in their Friday afternoon rounds, which can produce both low scoring from desperation plays and high scores from players who struggle to attack under pressure.

The course will play differently in afternoon conditions as the wind typically picks up at Augusta on Fridays, so morning scores will likely prove more attainable than what the afternoon wave faces.
