This is the 16th edition, and the U.S. is 13-1-1 all time after beating the Internationals 18.5 to 11.5 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2024.
The lone International win came at Royal Melbourne in 1998, on the Australian Sandbelt where Ogilvy grew up. The only tie came in 2003 at Fancourt in South Africa, when a Tiger Woods and Ernie Els playoff was halted by darkness. There is no purse here either. Players are not paid, and each directs an equal share of event proceeds to charities of his choice.
The Teams and Captains
Snedeker played the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cups and the 2013 Presidents Cup. Ogilvy played for three International teams (2007, 2009 and 2011) and served as an assistant on the last four. Each captain filled out a 12 man roster with six automatic qualifiers and six picks announced on Sept. 1.
The U.S. automatic qualifiers are Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa. Snedeker added Chris Gotterup, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun. Ogilvy picked Corey Conners, Nico Echavarria, Sungjae Im, Ryo Hisatsune, Nick Taylor and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Si Woo Kim, 13th in the world, is the highest ranked International, and the side represents seven countries.
Experience splits unevenly. The U.S. carries three rookies (Bridgeman, Gotterup, Koivun), while the Internationals have four (Fox, Echavarria, Hisatsune, Taylor). Scott makes his 12th appearance and is one match shy of Phil Mickelson's record of 55. Format and Scoring: 30 Points, 15.5 to Win
Every match is worth one point, for 30 in total. There are no playoffs, so a match level after 18 holes is halved at half a point each. The first team to 15.5 wins, and a 15 to 15 finish means the teams share the cup for two years, unlike the Ryder Cup, where the holder retains it.
The schedule runs 18 team matches, then singles:
Thursday: five Four-ball matches, the opener Snedeker chose as host captain
Friday: five Foursomes matches
Saturday: eight matches, Four-ball and Foursomes split across morning and afternoon
Sunday: 12 Singles matches
In Four-ball, each partner plays his own ball and the side takes the better score. Foursomes is alternate shot, one ball per side. With 12 players and five matches on each of the first two days, two players per team sit every Thursday and Friday session, and four sit each Saturday session. In the 2024 process the PGA Tour described, captains filled each session one match at a time in an alternating snake order, so every pairing is partly a response to the other side's card.
