Major League Baseball proposed on Thursday, Oct. 8, cutting the regular season from 162 games to 154 starting in 2029 and expanding the Division Series from best-of-five to best-of-seven, per ESPN. The proposals came in negotiations with the MLB Players Association over a new collective bargaining agreement. The catch is that the league tied them to a salary cap, which the union has balked at.

For bettors, an MLB 154-game season would reset how win totals are set, and a longer Division Series would shift how often favorites survive October. None of it is close to final, so here is what was actually proposed, what the union said and what to track before the current deal expires.

What the MLB 154-Game Season Proposal Includes

ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported the proposals. The core pieces:

154 games from 2029. MLB wants the new format to begin in 2029 to line up with the start of the sport's next national media deals, per ESPN.

A weekly off day. Monday would be a standard off day for most teams, apart from potentially one or two national broadcasts. Teams that play on a Monday would be off that Thursday. Holidays and other special events would override the leaguewide off day.

Best-of-seven Division Series. The Division Series would grow from five games to seven. The wild-card round would stay best-of-three.

Higher seeds pick opponents. The No. 3 seed in each league could choose to play either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the wild-card round, with the pick made right after the regular season ends. In the Division Series, the No. 1 seed could choose which wild-card winner to face.

No cut to yearly salaries. MLB is not proposing lower annual pay to match the shorter season, though bonuses and "similar provisions" would be adjusted proportionally, per ESPN.

MLB spokesperson Glen Caplin said a shorter schedule "would allow us to introduce a weekly off day, which is good for player health, while also creating a new national broadcast window to showcase our most exciting teams and players."

The 154-game calendar is not new. CNBC notes it was the standard from 1904 through 1960, except for 1918 and 1919, when World War I shortened the schedule.

What the Union Said

"Players will weigh in on these proposals and we will respond at the bargaining table," the MLBPA said in a statement quoted by ESPN. The union added: "Unfortunately, the league once again made clear that all of its proposals are contingent on players' agreement to a salary cap, a system that guts player rights and compensation, as well as its other anti-player proposals."

CNBC reported that an MLB spokesperson confirmed Thursday's changes are contingent on a cap and a salary floor. ESPN reports the sides have not agreed on the larger economic issues, so schedule changes and other major items are on hold until they do.

The CBA Calendar: Dec. 1 and Beyond

Baseball's five-year labor contract expires Dec. 1, per the Associated Press, and management is expected to impose a lockout. A lockout would stop trades and free-agent signings and could potentially threaten the start of spring training workouts on Feb. 9 and opening day on March 24, the AP reported Sept. 28.

The money gap is wide. Per the AP on Sept. 28, MLB's cap proposal would limit team spending next year at $245.3 million and set a payroll floor of $171.2 million for 2027. Union head Bruce Meyer pointed to Milwaukee having the best record in baseball for the second straight year and Tampa Bay having the best record in the American League as evidence that small markets can compete without a cap.

Betting Impact: Win Totals, Variance and Futures

The schedule and Division Series changes are pitched for 2029, per ESPN, and nothing is agreed. Still, the math is worth knowing now.

Season win totals. Books would set every over/under on a 154-game base. A team on a 95-win pace over 162 games would project to roughly 90.3 wins over 154 (95 x 154 / 162). The 81-win .500 mark becomes 77. Historical win-total models would need rescaling.

Playoff variance. Longer series reward the better team. As an illustration, a club that wins 60% of individual games against an opponent takes a best-of-five about 68.3% of the time and a best-of-seven about 71.0% of the time. At a 55% single-game win rate, those numbers are about 59.3% and 60.8%. A best-of-seven Division Series would shade value toward favorites in series prices and World Series futures.

Seeding leverage. Letting the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds pick opponents would make the top seeds more valuable than they are now. ESPN noted the proposal is pertinent to this postseason, when the American League's three best records, the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, landed on the same side of the bracket. Lockout risk for futures. The near-term betting risk is the calendar, not the schedule length. If a lockout runs into the spring, 2027 futures and win totals could be priced against an uncertain number of games. Check each sportsbook's rules on shortened seasons before holding long-dated tickets.

What to Watch Next

The union's formal response. The MLBPA said it would respond at the bargaining table.

Dec. 1 expiration. Per the AP, a lockout is expected once the deal expires, which would freeze trades and free agency.

Feb. 9 and March 24. Spring training workouts and opening day are the next dates at risk, per the AP.

2029 media deals. MLB wants the new format to coincide with the start of its next national media deals, per ESPN, so broadcast timing is part of this story.
