Minnesota is the outlier and it is not close. The Lynx are 20-2 inside the Western Conference and 16-2 on the road, and WNBA.com's Week 12 power rankings noted Golden State was the only team within five games of them.

The middle is where the jostling is. The No. 3 seed sits 5.5 games back of first and the No. 7 seed sits 8 back, putting Indiana, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Washington and New York in one tight band.

At the bottom, Seattle, Connecticut and Toronto are all out. WNBA.com's standings carry elimination markers on all three. Toronto is 10-25 and on a 12-game skid. Dallas holds the last spot, and it is holding it while sliding. The Wings were 3-7 in their last 10 entering Thursday. WNBA.com's Week 12 power rankings had Dallas holding a five-game lead for the eighth and final berth. On the Aug. 20 table, Dallas is 20-16 and 9.5 games back of first, while Portland, the expansion Fire, is the closest team below the line at 15-20 and 14 back.

Why the league goes dark on August 31

The WNBA's official key dates list a 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Break running Aug. 31 through Sept. 16. The tournament itself is Sept. 4 to 13 in Germany, and the league's January schedule release described it as a roughly two-week break during which numerous WNBA players are expected to represent their nations.

Then the sprint. The resumption on Thursday, Sept. 17, the five-game close on Thursday, Sept. 24 and the playoff tip all come from the league's own 2026 schedule release. The Aug. 31 to Sept. 16 break window comes from WNBA.com's key dates page.

How the 2026 bracket works
