Jon Rahm will not play in the relaunched version of LIV Golf, his attorney John Beck told U.S. Bankruptcy Court of New Jersey Judge Michael B. Kaplan at a hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 7, per ESPN. Jon Rahm leaving LIV Golf removes one of what Sky Sports called the league's two biggest names, as LIV tries to emerge from Chapter 11 without Saudi funding. Beck said Rahm and LIV were working to finalize a separation agreement by Oct. 15.
Jon Rahm leaving LIV Golf: what was said in court
"Mr. Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0 and has determined that those terms are unacceptable to him, and he will not be participating going forward in LIV 2.0," Beck said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach.
That is a turn from where Rahm stood in May. "Right now, I have several years in my contract left," he said then. "I'm pretty sure they did a pretty good job when they drafted that, so I don't see many ways out." ESPN's read is that LIV's bankruptcy apparently changed his circumstances.
The separation deal is a target, not a done deal. ESPN's Oct. 7 report describes it as still being finalized, so treat Oct. 15 as the date to watch rather than a confirmed exit date.
Why LIV 2.0 needed Rahm
Rahm, 31, signed with LIV in December 2023 as the reigning Masters champion, reportedly on a multiyear contract worth more than $300 million, per ESPN. He won four times on the LIV circuit and was its season-long individual champion in each of the past three seasons. Per ESPN, he was considered a linchpin in LIV's dwindling hopes to keep the circuit alive.
LIV and its related entities filed for Chapter 11 on Sept. 8, listing between $100 million and $500 million in assets and $500 million to $1 billion in liabilities, according to court records cited by ESPN.
On Monday, Oct. 5, LIV filed a restructuring support agreement indicating it would receive a $300 million investment from BC Partners, as long as certain conditions were met, per ESPN. One condition involves signing new player agreements, and ESPN noted it isn't clear which players have to sign for the deal to go through. CEO Scott O'Neil has said LIV 2.0 would include 10 tournaments with smaller purses.
How much LIV owes Rahm
In the bankruptcy filing, Rahm's $7.5 million was the largest of the six golfer claims ESPN named among the 30 largest unsecured claims, ahead of Bryson DeChambeau ($5.7 million) and Dustin Johnson ($5.5 million). Those figures reflect only past-due payments, not what was owed beyond the filing date.
The larger number is less certain. ESPN reported it is believed Rahm is owed more than $100 million, and Sky Sports, citing reports, said he is owed up to $150 million for the remainder of his deal. Neither figure is a court finding.
Can Jon Rahm return to the PGA Tour?
Not quickly, based on what the tour has said. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said on Aug. 25 that there were no current plans to bring back the Returning Member Program, per ESPN, and ESPN reported he affirmed that on Sept. 15. That program let LIV players who had won a major or the Players Championship since 2022 come back under conditions. Rahm, DeChambeau and Cameron Smith were eligible but declined.
Brooks Koepka used it to return in January, forfeiting player equity shares for five years and making a $5 million charity donation at the tour's request, per ESPN.
Rolapp also said in August that talks cannot start until a player is free of his LIV deal. "Anyone who's interested in coming to the PGA Tour needs to demonstrate that they are relieved of their contractual commitments or any tail obligations they might have in that legacy model," he said. Sky Sports reported that without the program, Rahm would face a mandatory one-year suspension and could not play on the PGA Tour until late August next year.
The clearer path is Europe. Rahm is a DP World Tour member after resolving his dispute with that tour in May, per ESPN. Sky Sports reported he paid around £2.21 million in fines, securing conditional releases for 2026 and Ryder Cup eligibility. Our DP World Tour 2027 schedule breakdown covers the European calendar he could build around.
Betting and DFS impact
Golf futures are priced event by event, so where Rahm can tee it up in 2027 decides which markets carry his name. In odds from DraftKings per ESPN's April 13 report on the 2027 Masters, Scottie Scheffler (+400) and Rory McIlroy (+600) were the only players shorter than 12-1. By our math, +400 implies 20%, +600 about 14.3% and 12-1 about 7.7%.
That April board predates the bankruptcy, so check current pricing before betting Rahm in any 2027 future, and don't assume a full 2027 schedule for him until his status is settled. What to watch next
Oct. 15 separation target. Beck said both sides were working to finalize the agreement by then. Rolapp has said PGA Tour talks cannot begin until a player is relieved of his contractual commitments.
Oct. 25 commitment deadline. The restructuring agreement extended the deadline for current LIV golfers to commit to the league to Oct. 25, per ESPN. Sky Sports reported it remains to be seen what DeChambeau and Smith decide.
Rahm's next start. He is skipping this week's Spanish Open, a tournament he has won three times, to await the birth of his fourth child, per ESPN.
