Where the F1 Drivers Championship 2026 Stands

Kimi Antonelli leads the F1 drivers championship 2026 by 81 points with nine rounds left. Every other number here bends around that one. A lead that size makes the interesting question arithmetic: how soon could it become unassailable.

Standings pulled from the official formula1.com results page on 18 September 2026, after Round 14, the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid on 11 to 13 September:

1. Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes, 292 2. George Russell, Mercedes, 211 3. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, 191 4. Lando Norris, McLaren, 186 5. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, 167

Max Verstappen is sixth on 145. Antonelli has eight wins from fourteen rounds, Monza and Madrid back to back among them. Norris, the reigning champion, has two.

The Clinch Math, and How to Check It

Three inputs decide everything. Get them right and the rest is subtraction.

1. Rounds remaining: nine. The 2026 calendar runs to 23 rounds, not 24. Round 15 is Azerbaijan on 24 to 26 September, and the finale is Abu Dhabi on 6 December. 2. Points per grand prix: 25 for a win, then 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 down to tenth. There is no fastest lap bonus point in 2026. 3. Sprints remaining: one. Six sprints were scheduled for 2026 and five are run. Singapore, on 9 to 11 October, is the last. A sprint pays 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 to the top eight, which you can read straight off the official Zandvoort sprint result.

So the maximum any driver can still score is nine races at 25, which is 225, plus 8 from the Singapore sprint. Call it 233.

Antonelli's lead over Russell is 292 minus 211, or 81. Because 233 is comfortably larger than 81, nothing is settled, and nobody should pretend otherwise.

The threshold is simple: Antonelli is champion the moment his lead is bigger than the pool. Each round he wins while Russell scores nothing swings that by 50, because he gains 25 and the pool drops 25. Singapore swings it by 66, since the sprint adds 8 on both sides of the ledger.

The deficit to close is 233 minus 81, or 152.

After Baku: 152 minus 50 leaves him 102 short.

After Bahrain, Round 16 on 2 to 4 October: 102 minus 50 leaves him 52 short.

After Singapore, Round 17: 52 minus 66 goes negative.

The earliest mathematically possible clinch is therefore Round 17 in Singapore. Check it directly. Antonelli wins Baku, Bahrain, Singapore and the Singapore sprint for 83 points, reaching 375. Russell, having scored nothing across all three weekends, stays on 211 with six races and 150 points left, so his ceiling is 361. 375 beats 361.

State the assumption plainly, because it is doing heavy lifting: that path needs Antonelli to win everything and his team mate to blank three weekends running. Treat it as the floor of the range, not a forecast.

Here is the more honest version. If Antonelli simply wins and Russell finishes second behind him every time, the gap grows by only 7 a race. Run that out and the clinch lands at Round 19 in Mexico, 30 October to 1 November, with Antonelli on 425 against a Russell ceiling of 408.

What Could Still Go Wrong for the Leader

Reliability, mostly. A pair of non-finishes for Antonelli while Russell wins turns an 81 point lead into something near 30 inside a fortnight, since Baku on 26 September and Bahrain on 4 October are eight days apart. That is the fastest the gap could realistically close.

The other risk is that Mercedes hold both of the top two places, so the team, not the grid, controls the outcome. That is why the board is so short on Antonelli even with nine rounds unrun.

Everyone from tenth down is already eliminated. Pierre Gasly on 41 cannot reach 292 even with a perfect 233. Liam Lawson on 59 can only tie Antonelli's current total, and would lose the countback, because ties go to the driver with more wins and Antonelli has eight.

The Constructors Picture

Mercedes lead on 503 to Ferrari's 358, a gap of 145 against a team pool of 402. Same calendar, same Singapore first chance, same Mexico realistic answer. We ran that one in full in our F1 constructors clinch breakdown, so the short version is that Ferrari's door is open by roughly three points and needs a flawless run.

Betting and Futures Impact

Antonelli is a prohibitive favourite and the board says so. Per bet365's posted price of 14 September 2026, he is -2500 to take the drivers' title, with Norris, Russell and Hamilton all at +1600 and Leclerc at +5000. That -2500 implies about 96 percent.

Per Covers' posted board of 14 September 2026, the prediction market column reads Antonelli 91 percent, Norris 3, Russell 2 and Hamilton 1.

The gap between the two numbers is the only interesting thing on the page: a prediction market read of 91 percent against a price of -2500, per bet365 on 14 September 2026, whose raw implied figure is about 96 percent before the margin. Neither source explains the difference. At -2500 there is nothing to buy on the favourite, and the field is priced for a scenario nobody can time. Our F1 predictions hub prices the races weekend by weekend.

What to Watch: Azerbaijan, 24 to 26 September

Round 15 runs at the Baku City Circuit, and note the quirk: race day is Saturday 26 September, not Sunday. Fifty one laps of a street circuit, per formula1.com, where a large points lead protects nobody from a wall.

Baku cannot settle the title, but it can reshape it. Norris arrives off a podium in Madrid, per Covers on 14 September 2026, which moved him past Russell as the distant second favourite. He also owns the two most recent non-Antonelli wins, at the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix.
