Tuesday was the last day Nikita Kucherov could sign an eight-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and he did not sign one. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement began Wednesday, Sept. 16, and limits players re-signing with their current team to seven years, NHL.com reported. The Nikita Kucherov contract is now a seven-year conversation at most, and it belongs to the reigning league MVP.

He has been eligible to extend since July 1.

What Happened With the Nikita Kucherov Contract

Nothing got done. Kucherov is in the final season of the eight-year, $76 million deal he signed July 10, 2018, which carries a $9.5 million average annual value, per NHL.com. He can become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

General manager Julien BriseBois did not pretend the calendar was irrelevant. "Throughout these contract negotiations, both parties I know would prefer to have a deal today to put that behind us," he said Wednesday. "We haven't been able to do that."

He also said where he wants it to end: with Kucherov signed to a contract "that will keep him in Tampa many years to come." The Lightning's own site reported that BriseBois is working with Kucherov's agent, Dan Milstein, and that the GM mentioned the rising cap and an "evolving" market.

Kucherov gave the topic one answer. "What's on my mind? My mind is trying to help the team this year," he said. "I control what I can control." NHL.com reported he shut down additional questions about his future. TSN noted on Sept. 17 that Milstein has declined to comment on talks throughout the summer.

BriseBois said there is no deadline. "There's no timeline. If you want to get technical he won't be a free agent until July 1 of next year," he said. "Hopefully it won't get to that point."

The Numbers Behind the Negotiation

Last season Kucherov was second in the NHL with 130 points (44 goals, 86 assists) in 76 games and won the Hart Trophy for the second time, per NHL.com. His first came in 2019. That is 130 divided by 76, or 1.71 points per game.

The Lightning's site added that the 44 goals tied his career high and that he notched his 1,000th career point along the way.

The longer record is why BriseBois talks the way he does. Kucherov has 1,124 points in 12 NHL seasons, all with Tampa Bay, and the club says he needs 14 points to become the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Steven Stamkos holds that mark at 1,137. Kucherov has reached 100 points in each of the past four seasons.

"I have every reason to believe that he's going to remain an elite player well into his 30s," BriseBois said.

Then there is age. Kucherov is 33 and turns 34 next June, per TSN. Thirty-four plus seven is 41, the age a maximum-term deal would reach. TSN wrote in August that an eight-year offer appeared unlikely at his age, so the lost year may matter less here than it does for a younger star.

Term still gives Tampa Bay an edge. TSN reported in August that the new maximum for players signing with new teams would be six years, against seven for a player re-signing. Seven minus six is one year that only the Lightning can put on the table. The mechanics of the change are covered in the Quinn Hughes contract breakdown.

Betting and DFS Impact

Start with the lineup. Kucherov is under contract for all of 2026-27, so an unsigned extension takes nothing off Tampa Bay's opening-night roster.

The Lightning opened at +1200 in BetMGM's 2027 Stanley Cup odds, per VegasInsider, read Sept. 17. Five teams opened shorter: Colorado at +700, Carolina at +750, Vegas at +1000, and Edmonton and Florida at +1100. If that number moves on contract talk alone, it is moving on sentiment.

Kucherov was +1200 to win the 2026-27 Hart Trophy as of July 20, per BetMGM's own Hart odds page, fifth on its board behind Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon at +300, Macklin Celebrini at +500 and Leon Draisaitl at +1100. That price predates camp, so check the live number. We found no posted market on where Kucherov plays in 2027-28.

For DFS and season-long formats, the inputs that matter are on the ice. Kucherov said he is excited to play with new defenseman John Carlson, who signed a two-year deal on July 1, and said of Carlson, "He's been a righty on the power play there." That is a usage question to watch in the four preseason games.

Depth is the other early variable. The Lightning said center Yanni Gourde had offseason hip surgery and is expected to be out until December, and that center Dominic James will miss approximately the first two weeks of the season with a broken hand.

What to Watch Next

First, a signature before the opener. NHL.com has the 2026-27 season beginning Sept. 29, and BriseBois said "the sooner the better." With the eight-year option expired, though, no date on the calendar forces either side's hand until July 1.

Second, the franchise scoring record. Fourteen points is a short climb at 1.71 per game, and a record night with no extension announced would put the contract back in the headlines.

Third, the playoffs. NHL.com noted Tampa Bay has four straight first-round exits, the latest in seven games against Montreal, and has not won a series since the 2022 Eastern Conference Final. Kucherov said he is hopeful of ending that streak.
